Gene Kelly. Su verdadero nombre era Eugene Joseph Currany nació el 23 de agosto de 1912 en el seno de una familia obrera, en uno de los barrios de trabajadores siderúrgicos de Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, donde estudió en la escuela de danza de su madre. También lo ayudó a financiar su educación universitaria.

Además de trabajar como obrero, Gene Kelly bailaba en conciertos locales con su hermano, Fred. Kelly se graduó como economista en la Universidad de Pittsburgh y en medio de la Gran Depresión económica, abrió un salón de bailes donde enseñaba y desarrollaba su propio estilo. Debuta en Broadway en el año 1938. Consigue el éxito con el papel que da título al musical Pal Joey (1940). Es contratado por los estudios MGM en 1942.

Gene Kelly se integra en el grupo del productor Arthur Freed. Donde encuentra al músico-productor Roger Edens, los realizadores Vincent Minnelli, Busby Berkeley, Stanley Donen y Georges Sidney, los coreógrafos Robert Alton y Charles Walters, los guionistas Irving Brecher, Fred Finklehoffe, Betty Comden y Adolph Green, las actrices y actores Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Howard Keel y Dan Dailey.

En sus inicios se le asocia con la primera actriz Judy Garland, con la que interpreta un maravilloso El pirata (1948). El mismo año, Gene Kelly es un d’Artagnan lleno de fantasía en la excelente Los tres mosqueteros de Sidney. Más adelante realiza e interpreta tres películas que marcan la historia del musical: Un día en Nueva York (1949), Cantando bajo la lluvia (1952) y Siempre hace buen tiempo (1955). La otra gran película durante este periodo es Un americano en París (1951), año en que recibió un Oscar especial por sus aportes al Séptimo arte. Después de unos años en aparente olvido, recuperó la fama al dirigir a Barbra Streisand en “Hello Dolly”, así como a James Stewart y Henry Fonda en “The Cheyenne Social Club”.
