Fred Astaire, Frederick E. Austerlitz (Fred Astaire) nació el 10 de mayo de 1899 en Omaha, Nebraska, EEUU. Hijo de un inmigrante austríaco y vendedor que estaba de viaje y su esposa Ana Geilus Austerlitz.

Aunque su familia era de origen austriaco, Fred Astaire nació y se crió en Estados Unidos. Desde muy pequeño destacó por sus dotes para la danza. A la edad de cuatro años aprendió a bailar siguiendo el ejemplo de su hermana Adele, 18 meses mayor, con la que formaría dúo musical.

En 1904, la señora Austerlitz se mudó con los niños a Nueva York donde fueron alistados en una escuela de intrucción artística llevada por Ned Wayburn, uno de los pioneros del tap dance, el moderno arte que bailaban.

Al año siguiente Fred y Adele hicieron su primer debut en una stage en Nueva Jersey como un joven matrimonio y empezaron una gira turistica en el circuito Orpheum en un acto llamado “Juvenile Artists Presenting an Electric Musical Toe-Dancing Novelty (Jovenes Artistas Presentan un Novedoso Eléctrificante Musical Bailando con los dedos del Pie).” Aunque Fred Astaire solo fué esporádicamente a la escuela pública en Nueva Jersey, la mayoría de sus enseñanzas las recibió por el camino bajo la tutela de su madre.

Debutaron en el teatro cuando él tenía 11 años tras perfeccionarse en ballet clásico en la Alvien School of Dance. Su unión se prolongaría hasta que Fred contó con dieciséis años. Juntos realizaron numerosas giras por el país.

Con el advenimiento de la I Guerra Mundial, los Austerlitz cambiaron su nombre a “Astaire”, algo más anglosajon, y los inseparables adolescentes hermano-hermana comenzaron a hacer famoso el nuevo nombre.
